Express Entry

Canada has one of the most positive immigration policies in the world and welcomes more than 200,000 new immigrants each year. Canada offers a great choice of both Federal and Provincial immigration programs, immigration to Canada has become increasingly popular due to main driver of the Canadian immigration system – Express Entry (EE). Express Entry applicants receive priority processing and increased accessibility for candidates from a broader range of occupations. Without a cap on the number of applications being accepted for processing, applicants can apply to Express Entry at any time without being concerned that the program will close or fill up before their application is completed.

All immigration programs managed under the Express Entry system have different eligibility criteria. The Express Entry involves two steps: 1. Complete an online Express Entry profile, be placed in pool of candidates and 2. Receive invitation to apply for permanent residence from IRCC. Candidates in the pool are raked using a point-based system (CRS).Getting into Express Entry doesn’t guarantee invitation to apply, since applicants have to meet all eligible and admissibility requirements. Upon entering the pool, candidates are assigned a CRS score based on factors including Education, work experience, language ability and other criteria. Highest-ranking candidates are regularly selected from draw and invited to apply for permanent residence.

Ontario Nominee Program (OINP)

Ontario is the most multicultural province in Canada. New immigrants each year choose to settle and call new home. Toronto has been called the most multicultural city in the world, where more than 100 languages and dialects are spoken. If you are planning to move to Ontario, this section provides information on the immigration process and options. Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program is an immigration program through which Ontario nominates individuals and their families for permanent resident status based on its labor market and economic development priorities. Some streams under this program may target skilled workers, others students or businesses.

Applying to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident under the provincial programs is a two-step process applicants will receive a PNP nomination first, which can be used to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry.

Ontario offers an opportunity to live and work permanently in the province for:

  • English-speaking skilled workers
  • French-speaking skilled workers
  • Master’s Degree graduates in ON
  • PhD graduates in ON
  • Foreign Workers with Job Offer
  • International Students with Job Offer

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is a permanent resident category for individuals who had already established themselves as skilled workers in Canada. CEC program opens the door to Canada for foreign students and foreign workers. For many international graduates, Canadian Experience Class may be fastest option for achieving Canadian permanent residence. One of the objectives of the CEC is to increase the supply of skilled workers in Canada. Please note that any work experience acquired in Canada without valid work authorization will not be considered. Self-employment and work experience gained while you were a full-time student (such as on a co-op work term) doesn’t count under this program.

CEC application will take some time to process. If you are currently working in Canada and you have applied for permanent residence under CEC class, you may be eligible for a bridging open work permit if your work permit will expire in four months or less. This means you can keep working while IRCC makes a decision on your permanent resident application. This program seeks to secure candidates with the specific skilled working experience obtained in Canada with proper authorization.

To qualify for the CEC through Express Entry, you must have:

  • At least 12 months of skilled work experience in Canada, in the last three years (before you apply). The work was full-time or an equal amount in part-time
  • Gained your work experience in Canada with the proper authorization
  • Take approved language test and meet minimum requirements
  • Planned to live outside the province of Quebec

The specific skilled working experiences being sought after are:

  • Management Job Experience: for example, Restaurant managers, Mine managers, Shore Captains (fishing)
  • Professional Job Experience: People usually need a degree from a university for these jobs, for example Doctors, Dentists & Architects etc.
  • Technical Jobs and Skilled Trades Experience: People usually need a college diploma or to train as an apprentice to do these jobs, for example, Chefs, Electricians, Plumbers
  • Candidate must have at least one year of work experience or having at least 1560 hours of paid work (continuous full-time or an equal amount in part-time).
  • The paid work experience must have occurred within the last 3 years before you
  • Self-employment and work experience gained while you were a full-time student (for example, on a Co-op work term) does not count under this

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

Federal Skilled Worker Class has traditionally been the most popular category. For applicants meeting minimum criteria, Federal Worker Skilled Class utilizes a point system to determine the applicant’s ability to become economically established in Canada. Applicants need at least 67 points to be eligible to apply.

Skilled workers are chosen as permanent residents based on their education, work

experience, English/French language skills, and other factors. If you score 67 or higher (out of 100), you may qualify to immigrate to Canada as a federal skilled worker. If you score lower, than the pass mark of 67 points, you won’t qualify to immigrate to Canada as a federal skilled worker. In addition to selection criteria, applicant should be able to demonstrate sufficient funds available for resettlement in

Canada. Once IRCC has determined that an applicant is a member of the Federal Skilled Worker Class, both the principal applicant and their family members, whether accompanying or not, must complete medical examinations if required, and pass criminal and security checks.

As of January 1, 2015 foreign nationals will be selected through Express Entry System and must receive invitation before they may apply. Under Express Entry, Federal Skilled Workers across 347 eligible occupations who meet minimum entry criteria, submit an expression of interest profile to the Express Entry Pool.

To be considered for Federal Skilled Worker program candidates require to meet minimum requirements like:

Work experience

  • In the same type of job as your primary NOC
  • Within the last 10 years
  • Paid work (volunteer work, unpaid internships don’t count)
  • At skill type 0, or skill levels A or B of the 2011 National Occupational Classification (NOC)

Family Sponsorship

Moving abroad and leaving your loved ones on opposite coast is not easy. One of the objectives

of Government of Canada is to see that families are reunited. Certain family members may qualify to settle in Canada long-term and become permanent residents under family class category. After becoming permanent residents, they can live, study and work in Canada, thus you no longer need to apply for visitor visa and provide letter of invitation. Like other immigration categories, family class sponsorship has certain requirements, such as minimum necessary income which should be met by sponsor. If you are wondering how to sponsor someone to Canada, you should start from reviewing family sponsorship applications, eligibility and requirements. You may be eligible to sponsor a child, spouse or a common-law partner living outside or inside Canada if you are 18 years of age or older and you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Super Visa

The Super Visa Program allows parents and grandparents to come to Canada as long-term visitors. Thus successful applicants will not be required to renew their visitor visa every six months, as they will be granted a multi-entry visitor visa valid for two years at a time with expiry date up to 10 years. You can apply online or on paper to get a parent and grandparent super visa. There are also specific requirements that you must meet to be able to apply.

To apply for the parent and grandparent super visa, you must: be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; be allowed to enter Canada and meet certain other conditions.

Your parent(s)s and/or grandparent(s) may be eligible for a multiple-entry visa for up to 10 years depending on individual circumstances. With the parent and grandparent super visa, eligible parent(s) and grandparent(s) can visit family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their status.

Immigration officers consider several things before they decide if you can come to Canada. You must be a genuine visitor to Canada who will leave at the end of your visit.

Visitor Visa

Every year, Canada welcomes nearly 50 million people from different countries. You can visit Canada as a tourist to see the family and friends or to do business. Whether you plan on visiting Canada for a few days or several months, you must meet some important immigration requirements.

There are so many reasons to visit Canada. It’s hard to think of a country more beautiful or more varied. Late last year, Lonely Planet released its “Best in Travel” lists for 2017 and at the top of its “Top 10 Countries List” Canada was selected as No.1 country to visit this year.

You can come to Canada as a tourist but during your stay, you’ll need enough money to support yourself and everyone included in your application. Most travelers need to apply for visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport. Canada has a range of visas that allow you to come for a holiday or to visit friends and family, as well as some special visas that allow other activities like short term study or business. Temporary resident visas can be good for one entry to Canada or for a period of time.

Spouse Open Work Permits

Spouses or common-law partners of full-time students with a valid study permit may apply for an open work permit. An open work permit will enable the spouse or common-law partner of the international student to work. Your spouse/partner will not require a job offer to apply, and his/her permit will be valid for the same period as your study permit. This is an excellent way for your spouse or your common-law partner to connect with the local community, gain valuable work experience and earn extra money. Your spouse or your common-law partner can apply for a work permit after you arrive to Canada. It is also possible to apply for the spouse/common-law partner work permit at the same time as applying for your initial study permit outside of Canada. Your minor child/children may also study without a study permit at the preschool, primary, or secondary level. Please note children accompanying an adult who is in Canada on a work or study permit may study in Canada without a study permit at the pre-school, primary and secondary levels.

Study Visas

Millions of applicants around the world are dreaming about being accepted into one of the Canadian colleges or universities and receiving study permit. Studying in Canada is an exciting and rewarding experience for many international students. Once you’ve decided what to study, you need to consider entry dates, application deadlines, student visa processing times and English language requirements. Aside from BA, MBA, PhD, Canadian colleges and universities have a variety of Certificate and Diploma programs, short-term summer language courses, continuing education and exchange programs. The main intake is in September each year, though many colleges and universities have a smaller intake in January or summer term also. Most foreign nationals require a study permit to study in Canada.

If your course is less than 6 months long, you’ll only need a visitor visa to come to Canada. However, if you plan to study for more than 6 months you’ll need to apply for a student visa. To apply for study visa first of all you need to obtain acceptance letter from educational institution. There are more than 98 universities and colleges in Canada, however the school of your choice must be approved by a provincial

or territorial government to host international students. If you plan to apply to college or university, this is the first thing you should check.
